How Board Breaks Make You a Better Martial Artist

Ripple Effect Martial Arts’ upcoming board break in Johnstown has been sold out for weeks. And if you’re one of the fortunate families to have secured your spot, get ready to blast through excuses.

There’s a very specific technical reason why we host board breaks as part of our martial arts training. Legendary martial artist Michael Jai White explains it this way: “To focus all of your power to a specific point of contact is the entire essence of a strike, and breaking is the only gauge that measures this.”

Your Black Belt tests will require you to break a board under pressure. Saturday will be wonderful practice. It’s an amazing feeling to use your skill and strength to bust a board, and obliterate an excuse that’s been holding you back in the same instant.

And if you’re not part of the break? We still want to see you out at the school this Saturday. Why? Three reasons:

  1. It’s exciting, even from the sidelines. If you’ve never been to a board break before, you won’t believe the energy. There are student showcase breaks. There are breaks en masse, with boards splintering all the way down the mat. Plus a few instructor highlight breaks you won’t want to miss.
  2. It’s cheerful. That’s figurative and literal. A board break’s full of cheers.
  3. It’s inspiring. One of the best parts of a board break is what your cheers lead to. Broken boards, yes. But a feeling that you’ve supported someone else, given them that push, that lift of confidence when they needed it most.

Break through excuses. See you Saturday.
